 October 17th - Jinesh Varia on Web Services in a Post Web 2.0 World
Jinesh Varia on
Web Services in a Post Web 2.0 World

..::PLEASE RSVP HERE::..

Technologies: Amazon S3, Web Services

Session abstract:

What’s possible in a post Web 2.0 world? Innovation continues at a mind-bending pace, and this presentation will showcase some thought-provoking new directions that Web Services are headed in (imagine computers programmatically calling people to perform tasks), as well as introduce a concept known as “Web Scale Computing”. The presentation will also provide an overview of Amazon Web Services, and feature code demonstrations showing how .NET developers are able to easily build managed clients for these services

More importantly, it’s an opportunity for an interactive discussion about what the future, shaped by Web services and Web Scale Computing, looks like.

Amazon spent ten years and over $2 billion developing a world-class technology and content platform that powers Amazon web sites for millions of customers. Most people think “Amazon.com” when they hear the word; however developers are excited to learn that there is a separate technology arm of the company, known as Amazon Web Services or AWS. Using AWS, developers can build software applications leveraging the same robust, scalable, and reliable technology that powers Amazon’s retail business. AWS has now launched eleven services with open API’s for developers to build applications, with the result that over 265,000 developers have registered on Amazon’s developer site to create applications based on these services.

In this session, Jinesh Varia, Evangelist for Amazon web services, is going to provide an overview and quickly dive into:

  • Code walkthrough of a .NET application - a cool application for people who suffer from "Shower Singing Syndrome"
  • A Code walkthrough of how existing ASP.NET Web site can that utilize robust storage infrastructure (Amazon S3)
  • A Code walkthrough of AJAX ASP.NET Application - S3Whois - that "gives email a face"

Also, Jinesh would love to answer any questions that you may have regarding Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and the newly launched Amazon Flexible Payment Service (Amazon FPS)

Speaker's Bio:

As a Web Services Evangelist at Amazon, Jinesh Varia helps developers take advantage of disruptive technologies that are going to change the way we think about computer applications, and the way businesses compete. He is focused on furthering awareness of web services and often helps developers on 1:1 basis in implementing their own ideas using Amazon’s innovative services. Jinesh has over 7 years experience in XML and Web services and has worked with standard working groups in XBRL. Prior to joining Amazon as an evangelist, he held several positions in UBmatrix including Solutions Architect, Enterprise Team Lead and Software engineer, working on various XBRL-based financial services projects including ASP.NET based Call Modernization Project at FDIC. He was also lead developer at Penn State Data Center, Institute of Regional Affairs. Jinesh’s publications have been published in ACM and IEEE. Jinesh is originally from India and holds a Master’s degree in Information Systems from Penn State University. He plays tennis and loves to trek

 September 19th - Sowmya Karmali on Agile Software Development for a .NET Developer
Sowmya Karmali on
Agile Software Development for a .NET Developer

..::PLEASE RSVP HERE::..

Technologies: NANT, Cruise Control and Test Driven

Audience: Developers, Application Architects, Development Managers

Session abstract:

Part I: The Ten Commandments for an Agile Developer

Any project that involves iterative planning and frequent (enough) integration is Agile enough to begin with. One can see enormous benefits just by following principles like feature-driven development (FDD) and test- driven development (TDD). While a lot is written about the need for self-managed development teams in an agile project, little is said about developers can do to become "self-managed". The "commandments" are derived from real life experiences while introducing agile processes to those who worked differently. Apart from showing off some battle scars, the session will cover the key processes and approach required to extract the value of agile processes.

Part II: Agile tools for .NET Projects

This is where we open the presents. This session talks in detail about the popular tools used specifically for agile .NET projects, like NANT, Cruise Control and TestDriven. It also talks about how to get these tools to work together to orchestrate your project development, build and testing process. Many of these tools are FOSS (Free and Open Source Software), and the others are available for a small fee.

Speaker's Bio:

Sowmya Karmali is a Group Product Manager at Aditi Technologies, a software services firm specializing in product engineering services. In her current role she conceptualizes go-to-market strategies for Aditi, with special focus on Web 2.0 and Office Business Applications using MOSS. She also created the Agile Core Group within Aditi to lead and mentor projects that embrace Agile Development Processes. She has helped teams adopt key agile processes like TDD, FDD and Project Automation.

She has spent over 9 years in software development as a developer, architect and project manager. She's a member of IASA (Bangalore Chapter). She recently relocated to sunny California from sunnier Bangalore. She holds an Engineering Degree from Goa University (India) and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

Building Applications with the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)

..:: PLEASE RSVP HERE ::..

Technologies: WPF, Expression Blend, VS.NET Orcas

Audience: Developers, Application Architects, Designers

Session abstract:

This presentation will be demo focused to accentuate the power of the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).  WPF is the next-generation presentation sub-system for Windows.  It provides developers and designers with a unified programming model for building rich Windows smart client user experiences that incorporate UI, media, and documents.  We’ll take a close look at XAML (Extensible Application Markup Language), a markup language for declarative application programming, and the role it plays in WPF applications.

WPF uses vector based graphics rendering, which results in better graphics and presentation for an application. WPF also has other features such as layout, styling, and data binding, which, when you mix with interactivity, enables scenarios such as interactive data visualization. When you put all this together, you have a unified API for various presentation components, such as 2D and 3D documents and declarative programming through XAML, which is a powerful platform for data visualization that can be used to really “light-up” your enterprise applications.

“Introduction to Advanced in an hour”: This presentation will take you from the absolute beginning showing you the state of the tools and where they are in their different stages of beta and how you can use them effectively to an “under the covers” look at some real WPF software already shipping in production.
